This week's song describes my and probably may people's) daily experiences and attitude of life quite accurately. What a nice description of how it feels to chase from meeting to lecture to telco to briefing to whatever.

Uta Köbernick is also a comedian and author. YouTube has a 55 minutes show with her as well.

Retrospect

AI Health 2026

The Comprehensive Center for AI in Medicine had organised a large conference on AI in medicine and I had the pleasure to be on a panel chaired by Margit Laufer.

Horst Bischof was there too.

Adjudicating False Information

The panel debate on the paper (see weekly 42/2026) is now available via YouTube.

Policy Brief: EHDS Opportunities for Supporting Research and Innovation

Phase IV, one of the research projects we are involved in published a policy brief on the European Health Data Space (EHDS) recently.

As part of the consortium, our team at the Department (Ibrahim Sabra, Kseniia Guliaeva, Selen Yakar and I) , provided the legal analysis behind two of the brief’s five proposed actions:

  • Binding definitions for PETs and synthetic data.
  • Harmonising how EHDS individual rights (primary- and secondary-use) are exercised.

Research Platform on Trustworthy Science Communication

We had our first platform meeting in Baden.

Prof. Dr. Sophie Lecheler has more about this on LinkedIn.

Selen and Julia were in the laundry and discussed the gender-perspective of AI in law.

Prospect

Klagenfurt

If you read this on Friday morning and are close to Klagenfurt and spontaneous you might join me at the future talks.

The hosting institution AIM – Center for [Human and Data] Sciences is a newly founded research center, dedicated to advancing human flourishing in the digital age through the integration of human and data sciences. Its head, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andrej J. Zwitter, is a lawyer by training with a remarkably international and interdisciplinary career.

The center started their YouTube channel recently and ploadad an introductory video only this Thursday

It might be that my talk will appear there - just like a talk from friends from Kyoto Universit (Prof. Yasuo Deguchi and Prof. Tatsu Inatani, see Weekly 26/2026) who were here a few months ago.

One of the topics I will very briefly talk about is that apparently the advocate generals's delayed opinion in C-250/25 – Like Company v. Google Ireland - a leading case on copyright implications of AI training - will be issued on November 4th 2026.

I will argue that Europe is - again - too slow and too late here and that Austria is even more behind.

European Commission

The Vienna LLP will have a session on the role ad functioning of the European Commission on Wednesday, November 4th, at 19.00. Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schima is their interview partner.

Social Media Ban banned

Austria's draft law on banning the youth from social media (weekly 36/2026) will not come (in the near future).

This (very much expected) outcome (Kommunikationsplattformengesetz, I hear you!) triggered quite some international media coverage (Die Welt, Spiegel, Stern, Deutschlandfunk, FAZ etc.).

Erich Moechel wrote a very noteworthy long read on the matter.

Münster: Access to Cultural Goods in Digital Change

I will be in Münster on Thursday and Friday to evaluate the work of the Centre for Advanced Study “Access to Cultural Goods in Digital Change”.

Look and Feel

Erika Giovanna Klien

Unteres Belvedere has a large and very nice exhibition on Erika Giovanna Klien, an Austrian painter and designer who emigrated to the USA in 1928.

I learned a lot about kinetic art and also about her personal life. The exhibition didn't mention anywhere that her illegitimate son Walter Klien was - presumably - a half brother of Johannes Mario Simmel.

Walking through Belvedere gardens after the exhibition was beautiful too.

Have a wonderful week and take care of yourself!

Kind regards
