Week 27/2024

That's me in the Corner

Week 27/2024

This is a snapshot of Vienna’s “Tuntathlon” that took place on Yppenplatz on Saturday afternoon, in front of one of Vienna’s best restaurants, Wetter. There are three competitions: “Handtaschelweitwurf” (handbag toss), “Synchronbügeln” (synchronised ironing) and “Stöckelschuhwettlauf” (high-heel race). It’s, however, mainly about tolerance, diversity and having a nice afternoon together.

NSFW (Nikolaus’ Song For the week)

This week’s song is the best version I know (in my personal judgement) of an all time classic. It’s from Jacqui Naylor.

A live version is on YouTube (Look at her gestures and listen to her timbre - how much more powerful they are than those of Michael Stipe in the version below!)

Another interesting version is this one, but it takes too long to get up too speed, the background voices remind me of a children’s choire. However, the bace and the saxophone are nice.

And this live version of the original - beautiful melody, great voice, but somehow like a group of professors slowly walking to a faculty meeting (perhaps they would wear suits and ties then) - is a friendly reminder on how difficult it is to age in dignity:

BTW: Jacqui Naylor has nice versions of Lola and Summertime as well:

Karl Stöger (and me) spoke about the Proposal for a Regulation on nature restoration COM/2022/304 final, and Federal Minister Gewessler’s “Yes” in the Council’s meeting.

We had planned for 60 minutes, but it took us 100. The legal issues are much more complicated than some of the politicions in the debate are willing to admit.

Twitter has two accurate summaries:

Robert Kerschbaumer, an Austrian attorney, discussed a recent case at the Austrian Supreme Court. This is new legal territory on financial compensation in a shitstorm. It’s very enlighting to see how technically and legally difficult it is to defend yourself in such a situation.

Some more on this case from Maria Windhager

and Ingrid Brodnig

Patricia Schiess discussed the differences and parallels in the financing of public broadcasters in Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

I learned a lot, in particular, on the initiative to significantly reduce the funding in Switzerland.

Inaugural Lectures and Entrepreneurships

Friday was a day of two very different and still similar events: A session with panel debate on entrepreneurship in Vienna’s startup incubater Wexelerate in the morning

and two inauguraal lectures in the evening

Clemens Böhmer, CEO at wexelerate, had an excellent chart on Europe’s situation, showing market capitalisation of companies in different regions in his presentation:

Europe is the cloud in light blue, Africa is the one in green. Guess who the other tow are. — Correct.

Teaching is coming close to the summerbreak, which is a good moment to reflect University studies. We will do this twice next week.

On Monday, July 1st, iurreform will be with us again,

talking about their open letter.

On Friday, Ralph Klawitter, will introduce us into Twitch.TV as a legal platform.

We will focus on https://www.twitch.tv/juranotalone and Klawitter’s position on reform of legal studies.

Daisy

is waiting for autumn and cooler temperatures to come.
