Week 20/2024
Das alles ist doch nur zur Unterhaltung gedacht

I received 2 letters from 2 different lost and found services this week, as expected. My ID-card is waiting for me at a different place from all the other stuff, as expected. The first one was useless (as I had all my stuff already), the second is annoying (as nobody can tell me what this is for).
However, this is nothing in comparison with my so far fruitless attempts to convince my Austrian Bank to allow me - again - to withdraw money from my account or to even - oh my God, how dare you! - pay something on the internet. So far, I stand at 5 different calls in 4 days with equally hepless bots and humans to get this up and running again. No success so far.
My German bank, however, has not even managed to send me anything yet. The only action they took so far was to charge me for the loss.
#NSFW (Nikolaus’ Song For the Week)
This weeks’s song is from Keimzeit.
I learned from this that “Kintopp” was used as synonym for “Kino” (Cinema), in particular in Berlin. There’s also a YouTube video of the song online
and a - very different - live-version

Panels and Presentations
I had the privilege to listen to and discuss with Dr. Ernst Ploil at Heidi Horten Collection on Klimt’s Fräulein Lieser.

I appreciated a panel debate of the Legal Literacy Project

and listened to a presentation from Yoshua Bengio at UNIVIE

Some media coverage on this at Der Standard and ORF.
We had a project-internal Smart-Fox meeting with Saskia, Theresa and Anna giving an overview on data protection and copyright, me speaking on the EHDS.

(The project’s logo is AI generated, btw).

#arsboni
We spoke about survival strategies in law studies
and the struggles of and with Open Access in times of AI.
Media Privilege and Data Protection
The Government finally presented their draft law with a new § 9 Data Protection Law. The review period is only two weeks long, you need to hurry if you want to contribute. I shared first thought in OE1 Mittagsjournal and in Der Standard.

#arsboni
Friday, 11th of May at 9.00 CET is scheduled for episode 500 of #arsboni.
When I started with this four years ago, I would not have expected that this project would last more than 2 months. It’s still one of my most loved projects and it’s still growing (slowly, but steadily).

Thank you to the many, many people (guests, viewers, crirical friends, etc.) who are so important for this - every week.
Legal Tech Hackathon
The five teams working in this year’s legal hackathon will pitch on Monday, May 13th, at Fachhochschule Campus Wien Room A.-1.01, Favoritenstrasse 226, 1100 Wien, at 17.30. This is a public event, everybody is most welcome to see and discuss fresh ideas - going from patent law to pro bono work of lawyers and many other things.
Pint(s) of Science
From May 13 to May 15 you will have plenty of opportunities to drink beer and to listen to interesting presentations of scientif work at the Pint of Science. I will contribute on May 14 and speak about “Schweigen im Wald” - which is a metaphor for Europe’s regulatory approaches to AI.

Yearly DPO Conference
On Thursday, I will (presumably) be speaking at the yearly Conference of Public Data Protection Officers that is organised by the “Städtebund” and the Austrian DPA in Linz. This is (probably) not public and I haven’t found any information online yet, but last year’s program details are still available.
Daisy
loves the fact that there is a public holiday in this week and that sunset is rather late already so that she can have a romantic evening walk with some remaining light.

Have a wonderful week!
Kind regards
