Week 04/2024

Still Winter

Week 04/2024
Image taken during Harald Kittler’s wonderful presentation at our AI Medicine and Law Conference.
The very first usage scenario of a selfiestick that makes any sense, according to Kittler (a melanoma detector).

Temperatures are still low, but ambitions are high and there are plenty of inspirational things happening. And, sometimes, when it’s sunny, one can already feel the very first spring breeze. I hope, you feel it too.

Retrospect

Very interesting input was provided by Ilse Reiter-Zatloukal on the history of criminal sanctions against (direct) quotes from criminal files in the media.

And equally interesting thoughts on #AI in public administration law were shared by David M. Schneeberger.

A brilliant presentation by Prof. Dr. Martin Husovec brought some light into the content moderation rules in the Digital Services Act, in particular articles 34 and 34. Martin is an excellent speaker with (more than) profound expertise on the DSA openly sharing many of his ideas and insights in a DSA-Newsletter .

#Some Media

I was kindly invited to a long interview on #ai and the AI-act for Austria’s Public Broadcaster. It’s still avaiable for approx. 25 days. I appreciated, in particular, the cosy atmosphere and the questions from the audience.

I also gave a brief statement for “Der Standard” on a recent CJEU-Case (C-33/22), dealing with interesting issues of separation of power and competences of data protection authorities. And, last not least, my opinion on the lack of a federal law provision on video based entrance controls in city centres was mentioned again.

ORF

There was a very interesting event at Vienna’s University of Economics on the governance structure of ORF. This is Hans Peter Lehofer’s prognosis on what’s going to happen in the near future: (almost) nothing.

AI, Cancer, Law

The conference was, in my view, very successful. We had plenty, plenty of very relevant input, very prominent people on both sides of the panel and the day was packed with information. Dr. Sonja Dürager was one of the lawyers speaking - on liability.

2 remote presentations will be made available via the conference website soon, so check it out there.

If you are a student and want to work with us or know a student who might want to, here are 2 opportunities (both require some (basic) knowledge of German). The first one is great for people interested in online education, the second for people interested in the core machinery of project work at a University Department. Both roles are critical for our success in 2024.

1.) Online-Educator

  1. Organisational Assistant

We would love to hear from you!

Daisy

is much more relaxed than many people around her. She’s greeting her friends.

Have a wonderful week!

Kind regards
